Mowing Tips

Mow your lawn frequently and when it is dry.

Mowing is the most important task of the homeowner to have an attractive lawn.

Mowing your lawn frequently, but only taking a little off is the best for your lawn.  Removing too much leaf, which is about a third in one mow weakens your lawn.
Weekly during growth periods is best, but aim to never remove more than 1/3 of the leaf.  During peak growth look to mow weekly and reduce your mowing during cooler or hotter times. Always remove clippings.

Raise your mower height

Aim to mow at 5 - 7cm (1.5 -3cm for fine fescue/browntop lawns), the latter in Summer time. For simplicity, measure between a hard surface and the bottom edge of your mower's deck. Keeping to this height will help keep your lawn healthy and requires less water.  Don't be afraid to set your mower at its highest setting - this is especially important during Summer.

Keep those lawn mower blades sharp - it's better for your lawn.

Mulch mowing is perfectly fine—as long as you mow frequently enough for the clippings to stay short and break down quickly.

If the grass is overgrown always catch.

It's important to note that you should not mow your lawn if it is under severe heat stress. See our watering tips to identify signs of heat stress in your lawn.
