Autumn & Winter Care
Autumn & Winter Lawn Care Tips
Autumn and winter are often the most neglected times of the year for lawn care. While you’re staying warm indoors, your lawn is exposed to wind, rain, low light, and slower recovery. A little attention during these cooler months will keep it healthy and ready to bounce back in spring.
Continue mowing through winter
Regular mowing keeps the lawn tidy and healthy, even when growth slows. Mow only when needed and avoid mowing during very wet conditions.
Always use sharp mower blades
Sharp blades give a clean cut, helping the grass recover faster and reducing the risk of fungal disease.
Mow only in dry conditions
Avoid mowing wet lawns and never cut the lawn too short. Maintain adequate leaf length to protect the grass during colder months.
Remove fallen leaves regularly
Leaf litter blocks light and air. If left on the lawn, it weakens the grass underneath and can cause thinning of desirable grass species.
Turn off irrigation systems
Irrigation is rarely needed during autumn and winter. Ensure systems are turned off to prevent unnecessary watering and potential damage. This is also a good time to have your system serviced before the next season.
Watch for winter damage
Brown or thinning patches during winter can indicate pest activity. Grass grub and porina are common causes of winter lawn damage and should be monitored closely.
